Antarctic Oceanography: Then & Now

THEN:

…and NOW:

These days, the plankton nets are a little larger. There are satellite phones and internet connections. We have GPS technology, hot tubs, and widescreen TVs. And the ships’ hulls are a little more, uh… reinforced? Life on an Antarctic research vessel may be less unpredictable, but it is no less magical in 2011 than it was in 1911.

(“Then” is a silver gelatin photoprint, ca. 1912, from the collections of the Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales. “Now” is a digital photograph by Zena Cardman.)

Plus when was the last time you saw someone smoking a pipe on a research vessel during field work?

    1. 2011, actually. 🙂

  2. I love the 1912 photo! Especially the pipe…
