Send your artwork to the bottom of the ocean!

Haven’t you always dreamed of sending your art 5,000 meters down to the bottom of the ocean? Okay, maybe not, but if you think that sounds pretty awesome: now’s your chance! In late September, the ocean drilling research vessel JOIDES Resolution will head to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Scientists on board from the Center for Dark Energy Biosphere Investigations will be putting equipment on the sea floor, and they want you to decorate it. Send your original black and white drawings (no larger than 8.5″ x 11″) to deepmicrobe@gmail.com by September 10, 2011. Winners will be selected by the 17th, and their artwork will be stenciled onto the Circulation Obviation Retrofit Kit. What in the heck is that? Check out its acronym: CORK! The CORK will spend two years stoppering a hole drilled into the mud, giving us insight into how the life down there uses energy and thrives without any sunlight.
