The State of the World’s Unassessed Fisheries

To assess the state of the World’s fisheries is not an easy task but to evaluate those fisheries that lack formal assessment is a major endeavor. A new study published online in Science evaluates the status and solutions for the World’s unasssessed fisheries. These fisheries represent over 80% of the global catch. The results… well not that good. Most of those unnassessed fisheries are doing worse than the assessed counterpart and fish stocks continue to decline. However, if these fisheries are rebuilt and well manage a great portion of these fish stocks can improve considerably.

Watch and listen to one of the co-author of the paper, Steve Gaines, dean of the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at the University of California, Santa Barbara talking about their new scientific findings.
