How goliaths used to be

Ahhhh, those were the good old days… when ladies in bikinis and men with beards and short shorts stood next to really big fish.

It’s great to see Emmett’s film of a Goliath grouper in Cuba. This pic is one of many from the archives at the Florida Keys public libraries showing the size of trophy Goliath’s caught back in the 1950s.

I wrote about them a while back at Wild Ocean Blue, when divers and conservationists were campaigning to keep protecting these big fish – there was a chance that a Florida fishing ban would be lifted because some said Goliath groupers had recovered far enough.

Luckily for the fish, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission have kept the fishing ban until more information is gathered to say – for sure – one way or the other, how these big guys are getting on in Florida. And with nearly half of Florida dive centres saying they’d rather the ban was kept, it seems that watching these fish alive in the water is a bigger deal these days than catching them and posing for pictures.
