The year in review
During SeaMonster’s one-year birthday week, I thought I’d share some of our traffic stats: We had nearly 100,000 unique visitors and nearly half a million page views. Our traffic came from 190 different countries including Syria, Uzbekistan and Tonga. People used a variety of different (non-computer) devices with the iPhone being the most popular to access SM.…

Trophic cascade of the purple marsh crab
Don Strong, you are going to love this film. Not only does it animate one of your favorite ecological processes in a habitat you know and love; it even has an animated Dr Mark Bertness! The film is by Brown undergrad Stephanie Yin. It won the best student film competition at last week’s Beneath the Waves…

In search of sharks and mermaids
That was Abel Valdivia’s talk title at #BEM2012 (not really). He just posted a nice piece on The Abaco Scientist (AKA Dr Craig Layman) explaining a poster he gave recently on his work that Iv’e reposted without permission below. Thanks Craig and Abel! I am currently a PhD graduate student in the John Bruno Lab…

Gloop
This great video won the “peoples choice award” at the recent 2012 beneath the waves film festival. Told like a Brother’s Grimm fable, Gloop offers a…

Interview with Rachel Graham
Excerpted from the NYT. Read the full piece by Claudia Dreifus here. You are a citizen of Belize. Did you grow up here? No. I spent a large part of my childhood in Tunisia, that little tinderbox that last spring sparked so many changes in the world. I’m very excited to be from there. My…

Seahorse with dangerous underwear
We’re celebrating our first year of Seamonstering and I want to get things started with my very first post from April 16th last year, featuring one of my favourite seahorse illustrations. A seahorse with underpants decorated in hand grenades? Another with a shi shi hairdo? Well no. These cartoon seahorses are in fact festooned in…

Now we are one
Happy Birthday to us… This week Seamonster is one year old. Faced with this special occasion, we’re all getting a bit misty-eyed and we just can’t help ourselves from taking a sentimental dip through our archive to grab out some of our favourite moments from the past 12 months. There’ll be plenty more new…

Interview with Nancy Knowlton about marine biodiversity and climate change
There is a nice interview with Nancy Knowlton in Yale Environment 360, excerpted below: e360: Much of your earlier research was done in the Caribbean, in Jamaica. What was the state of the coral reefs in that part of the world at the time? And what kind of changes physically have you seen in recent decades? Knowlton: You…
